During the December holiday Adri and I traveled through breathtaking scenery, and got to know eastern Europe. We started in Switzerland, where she had stayed the previous 5 months. We then worked our way slowly towards Rome, via Austria, Poland, Slovenia, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Although Prague was third on our itinerary, I would like to start there, at a little bar in the middle of the town, where we met up with friends on the last night of 2014.
The Hemingway Bar was just as I would have imagined it. Being such a big fan of his work, you would have thought that by know I would have known about this bar, which I did not. Thanks to Jandre and Eunice, I had the most memorable night.
An enterprise inspired by Ernest Hemingway, a famous patron of bars who lent his name to more than a few cocktails. He famously improved many recipes, which is why bars throughout the world today prepare cocktails such as the Hemingway Daiquiri and his Papa Doble. People associate his bar life exclusively with Cuba, but this is incorrect!
While it is true that bars such as La Bodeguita and El Floridita established their fame on Hemingway’s frequent presence in these enterprises years ago, the writer loved good bars and drinks throughout the world.
The Hemingway Bar devotes considerable attention to his drinks of choice: absinthe, rum and Champagne.
The assortment of absinthe varieties their bar offers is certainly the most extensive in the Czech Republic. They have very rare replicas of the best absinthes ever made. They serve this noble spirit in the traditional way. Guests are very surprised at the general ignorance circulating about absinthe. They have their own ideas about how to drink absinthe, which unfortunately are often very wrong (including setting cheap Czech absinthe substitutes on fire).
The fine selection of rums stocked by their bar exceeds two hundred varieties. The guests can order a rum “tasting experience” (pre-order necessary) involving several two-centilitre samples of rum with a piece of chocolate, nuts and dried fruit. This sampling will have a positive effect on the guest’s preference for a particular brand of this Caribbean spirit in the future. An interesting fact tied to the Hemingway Bar and rum is that The Hemingway Bar founded the first Rum Club in the Czech Republic. They aim to broaden the horizons of the guests and other lovers of rum. Companies that distribute various brands of rum in the Czech Republic contribute products and information to their rum club.
They also offer a selection of the noblest sparkling wines from the Champagne region. An assortment includes not only big and famous brands; but they also provide you the opportunity to taste Champagne from very small producers whose production is less than 30,000 bottles per year. Be assured that among them you will find many gems at unbeatable prices.
However, the Hemingway Bar is definitely the domain of first-class cocktails, which are only made from premium and ultra premium products and fresh fruit juices. Their primary objective is to achieve the utmost in cocktail gastronomy. Highly experienced bartenders will take care of you and provide you with excellent service.
And so we talked and enjoyed first-class cocktails into the last night of 2014 and we were reminded of Hemingway and the time he said: “Never go on trips with anyone you do not love.”
