“Men go abroad to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars, and they pass by themselves without wondering.” Saint Augustine
We decided to take a drive to where we could be close to the ocean. The surfers enjoyed the calm sea and the dolphins that played around in the waves made my day. They came very close to some of the surfers and it looked like both parties had a great time. I felt happy for both the surfers and the dolphins. I love the ocean, and I feel passionate about the ocean because of its raw untamable beauty. I was in my happy place and I enjoyed that moment deeply.
We ascribe value to certain places or certain experiences because it brings with it a sense of belonging and we immediately know when it hits the spot. That is how we distinguish between what we feel passionate about and what we find interesting. Fate often knocks on our door and when it does, most of the time, it asks us to take a chance and change something. We are supposed to feel passionate about life and what we do. We want to live for the memories? That place, that moment. Think about how many times you told a story about something you did that made you feel alive. We don’t often tell the boring stories of how we choose to do something easy. No, we tell the stories about how we took a chance and within it we find a very subtle backbone for a willingness to change. Without a willingness to change, a dream carries no risk at all. Its nice to have a dream to do something ‘one day’ because it makes us feel that we are capable of more than we are doing at the moment. ‘The dangerous thing about a dream, is trying to transform your dream into a reality’, as Paulo Coelho puts it.
We are so very cautious to change because we are afraid of being defeated. Paulo goes on: “The defeated are those who never fail. Defeat means that we lose a particular battle or war. Failure does not allow us to go on fighting. Defeat comes when we fail to get something we very much want. Failure does not allow us to dream. Its motto is: Expect nothing and you won’t be disappointed.”
I often try and think of the people that made me feel this way. ‘That person, those words.’ Why did I believe certain people when they said ‘it could not be done’? ‘Defeat ends when we launch into another battle. Failure has no end: it is a lifetime choice.’ We should not be afraid to change knowing that it will take us on a new road, one less traveled. We are born with this sense of adventure, but only some seek to explore this challenge of a most exciting life.
Only some seek to challenge routine and to live out a great ambition or dream. It is said that ‘difficulty’ is the name of an ancient tool that was created purely to help us define who we are. When we decide to embark on an adventure or go through the process of change it will never, at first, be easy. It is hard for a reason. The weary ‘traveler’ goes on with his new path and he gets tired and he misses the people that he left behind. He questions his decision often but yet, at every crossroad he has to decide where to go, he feels more and more confident and within his heart he can feel a great feeling of…joy.
If you are a happy person, you are on the right road.
You will know when you are a happy person. And even although you might have fought hard against it in your own silent battle because you are afraid to be defeated or you don’t want to leave something or somebody behind- it is my believe that we all know happiness. There is a very real chance that you might not get what you want when you go after it- because the great dreams fight back. Your own adventures would need to test you, because if you succeed, and you carry on, there can be no greater sense of joy and responsibility for what waits after. Finding what makes you happy is easy; all you have to do is to trust yourself. And trust change, and trust adventure, its been there for some time now. If it can make curious people build a wooden ship and explore new lands…it can make you find your joy.
